Marietta had a population of 14,153 in 2007. Marietta is the county seat of Washington County, whose population was 61,576 in 2007.

History buffs relish in the stories of the Ohio Company’s establishment of the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory and the naming of Marietta in honor of Marie Antoinette, who was Queen of France when the French aided the colonies in the Revolutionary War.

Many area residents choose to stop by each Saturday morning at the Fairgrounds to choose among the many options at the River City Farmers Market--a real hit in the Summer months.

In 1860, oil was first drilled in the Mid-Ohio Valley region.  A great deal of wealth was generated for investors during oil booms in 1875 and 1910. Some of Marietta’s downtown real estate has maintained that value over the years. In 2008, there were 5 sales in downtown Marietta over $300,000, while the newer upscale neigh-borhood of Pine Meadows in the area of North Hills had two sales over $400,000 in 2008.

Devola, North of Marietta on Route 60, has been an important housing neighborhood for this area,  with its level lots suitable for many ranch style homes. The population of Devola was 2771 in the 2000 census. In 2008, there were 36 sales in Devola with an average sales price of $139,112. 

In 2009, there were 171 homes sold with a median price of $92,000 and an average days on the market of 170 days.
