Vienna

Vienna residents will tell you that Vienna is NOT Parkersburg's bedroom but developed at the same time as Parkersburg, as settlers came down the Ohio River heading West. 

Vienna is located along the Ohio River, North of Parkersburg on Route 14 and had a population of 10,613 in July 2007.   

Dr. Joseph Spencer, Vienna's founder, was given this tract of land for his services in the Revolutionary War and named the city after Vienna, New Jersey, where he is believed to have taken part in a battle of the Revolutionary War. Unlike Alexander Parker in Parkersburg, he brought his family and settled here.  

Vienna remained largely farmland for many years. One noteworthy occurrence in the development of Vienna was the construction of The Parkersburg, Marietta, and Interurban Railway, the streetcar line, in 1902 which aided in Vienna's development making transportation easier.

Also in 1902, the Parkersburg Country Club was located in Vienna and many Parkersburg residents built homes in its vicinity. 

The advent of the Grand Central Mall in the 70’s, brought increased retail outlets, motels, and restaurants until the cities of Vienna and Parkersburg grew together on Route 14.  

Currently an important hub of commerce in the Mid-Ohio Valley, Vienna’s Grand Central Mall, includes many retail outlets including Sears, Pennys, Elder Beerman, Belk, and ToysRUs.  

The Mall also provides the Regal Cinema so we can all see our favorite flicks.   

If you ask a local person why they like living here, they'll say its because it is a great place to raise children and enjoy events like the annual ice cream social to benefit the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department, like enjoying family picnics and swimming in Jackson Memorial Park,  like taking part in recreational sports of all kinds sponsored by the Vienna Recreational & Improvement Association, and like enjoying a quiet moment at the Vienna Public Library. 

For outdoor hiking or photography, take a quiet walk at The McDonough Wildlife Refuge located along Rosemar Road. This  277-acre wildlife area is available for hiking and enjoying nature up close

My clients love to stop at Holl’s Chocolate when on a tour of homes in Vienna. Their Swiss chocolate is scrumptious, made from the finest ingredients so they often want to take some home as gifts.    

Vienna real estate is varied with old homes mixed in with new ones.  Vienna is a popular area to live because of its proximity to shopping. 

The Glenbrook/Greenmont area in North Vienna is popular for local professionals and transferees with a median sales price $310,000 in 2008.   

Vienna had 139 residential sales in 2009 with an median sales price of $107,000, and an average days on the market of 142.

Children attend one of the three highly-rated elementary schools --Neale, Vienna or Greenmont, Jackson Middle School and Parkersburg High School.
