Belpre, Ohio
The City of Belpre, located along the Ohio River, was established in 1789 by members of the Ohio Company.
Just like across the river in West Virginia, Revolutionary War veterans received land as payment for service. The location, earlier surveyed as “Belle-Prairie,” French for beautiful meadow, became the settlement of Belpre.
Farming became the main means of livelihood here and some continues in Washington County today providing area fresh produce in local markets.
The river was the source of transportation for early settlers and was the attraction to the chemical industry which brought Shell Chemical, now Kraton Polymers Company here providing good jobs to area residents.
Today, the river offers the backdrop for festivals and the annual August homecoming, and opportunities for recreation.

Beautiful Civitan Park provides river access, walking tours, a place for a picnic lunch and especially a great place to attend free concerts at the bandstand on a warm Summer evening.
Belpre is also the home of Middleton Doll, known world-wide for its dolls where you can visit and adopt your own little one.
Local residents applaud the construction of Route 50, its opportunity for growth and economic development with its easy access to Washington, WV plants.
The census of 2000 determined there were 6660 people, 3,068 households, and 1923 families residing in the city.
There were 66 houses sold in Belpre in 2009 with an median sales price of $98,000 and an average days on the market of 127.
Many of Belpre’s homes are ranches taking advantage of the level topography.
